Environmental Education

A lack of understanding and knowledge of the earth’s natural processes and consequently environmental issues by urban as well as rural individuals and communities is part of the problem as it cultivates a lack of concern for degraded ecosystems, whose health is crucial to our as well as other species survival. Part of saving the natural environment is to foster an appreciation of nature, wildlife, as well as the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

I partnered with Miriam College Environmental Studies Institute in integrating Environmental Education in school’s curriculum, together with the Department of Education. Miriam ESI’s Teacher’s Training in the Pedagogy of Environmental Education is a 3-day training program that educate teachers in environmental issues. The teachers then learn ways of integrating environmental concepts in all subjects. It may be as simple as a poem to as elaborate as chemical equations. Issues of the environment are highly interdisciplinary ranging from culture and society to the sciences, thus an integration in the Department of Educations list of required subjects is essential.
